Paediatric intensive care unit (PICU)

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust

Paediatric intensive care

Southampton is the lead centre for paediatric intensive care in central southern England and its 14-bed unit cares for children from birth up to 18 years of age with some of the most complex illnesses and injuries.

The PICU team works closely with specialists from all surgical and medical areas, particularly the children’s cardiac service.

The unit, which looks after 950 to 1,000 patients per year from across the south of England, is the sixth largest PICU in the UK by number of admissions and has one of the best survival rates.

Children are also referred from hospitals as far afield as Plymouth, Milton Keynes and the Channel Islands for specialist care, while the unit also provides a 24-hour retrieval service.

See the unit’s information for patients and families for more details on visiting arrangements and routines.
