Fetal cardiac diagnosis

If your antenatal team suspect that there is a problem with your baby’s heart they will refer you for a specialist heart scan.

Find out more about the fetal cardiology service below.

About the fetal cardiology service

Our network fetal service offers appointments five days a week jointly with our feto-maternal obstetricians and we aim to see all fetal cardiac referrals within three calendar days.

Obstetric departments (including obstetricians, midwives and sonographers) in our network will refer directly to our services at both Oxford and Southampton.

  • All fetal cardiac clinics are attended by a fetal cardiologist, feto-maternal obstetrician, feto-maternal midwife and children’s cardiac nurse specialist (CCNS)
  • All babies diagnosed fetally with a cardiac problem have an agreed delivery plan shared among the multidisciplinary team
  • All duct-dependent conditions are delivered at Oxford or Southampton, except where comfort care/palliative care is chosen and the family request a delivery closer to home
  • All fetal patients with transposition of the great arteries are delivered at Southampton due to the potential need for balloon septostomy.
