Ocean Ward

One parent or carer is offered a bed either next to their child’s bed or elsewhere on the ward.

There are shower and bath facilities and a kitchen with fridge and freezer storage and a microwave where parents can cook their own food.

Bed linen and towels are provided and there are laundry facilities on the ward with a washing machine and tumble dryer (detergent provided).

The ward also has smart TVs in communal areas and free Wi-Fi provided by the Families of Ocean Ward charity, while weekly parking tickets are available for a reduced price for the hospital site car parks.

Parents and carers will find shops and cafes in the hospital and a small supermarket within walking distance from the hospital grounds. There are larger shops nearby on Shirley High Street which are within a 20-minute walk or 10-minute drive/bus journey.

Ronald McDonald House

If accommodation is required for another parent or carer, a room may be provided at on-site parent accommodation facility Ronald McDonald House, run by Ronald McDonald House Charities.

The house has private family rooms which sleep up to four people and each room has an en-suite bathroom. Fully-equipped shared kitchens and laundry facilities are also available.

There is a £25 key deposit for the room but no charge per night. If you need help with this please contact the children’s cardiac nurse specialists (CCNS) team.

When a child is admitted to hospital for a stay of more than two nights, staff add family names to the waiting list and rooms are prioritised based on the length of the child’s stay and how far the family lives from the hospital.

Due to the constant turnover of rooms, it is not possible to ‘pre-book’ rooms at the house.
